And then there was Walmart. After Black Friday ads for Best Buy andTarget were leaked, the last — and biggest — retailing giant did all it could to prevent its Black Friday sales circular from reaching the Internet, including sending cease-and-desist letters to sites that tried to post it — until apparently just giving up.
But who cares about the politics of posting ads online — let’s get to Walmart’s Black Friday deals on HDTVs and Blu-ray players. As usual, there are a couple of eye-popping sale prices on sets from lesser manufacturers: In this case, a 32-inch LCD from Emerson for $198, a 50-inch 720p plasma from Sanyo for $498, and a 55-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD from Element for $799, the latter available only on the Walmart Website. But a few top-tier vendors are represented as well, especially Samsung, who has five LCD TVs on sale.
Starting at $328, there’s the 32-inch Samsung LN32C350, and the 40-inch 1080p LN40C500 is also under $500 (at $498, a penny more than at Sears on Black Friday). For an extra 6 inches of screen size, you can get the LN46C600 for $798 ($300 less than the current price at TigerDirect); the 52-inch LN52C530 is $998 (currently $1,169), but unlike the LN46C600, it only has 60Hz refresh rates instead of 120Hz. If you’d prefer an LED-backlit set, the Samsung UN46C5000 46-incher is $898, marked down significantly from $1,249.
Walmart is also advertising one Vizio Black Friday HDTV deal and one from LG. On Saturday only, the Vizio E370VL 37-inch 1080p LCD is $378 (regularly $468), while the 42-inch LG 42LD400 will be available on Black Friday for $478. Finally, there’s one Sony Bravia Black Friday TV deal, another Saturday-only sale: $698 for the 46-inch (but 60Hz) KDL-46EX400, which Walmart has been selling for $763.
There are also a pair of Sony Blu-ray players on sale on the day after Black Friday, one for $98 (BDP-S270) and a Wi-Fi-enabled model for $158 (BDP-S570). More Blu-ray deals include the LG BD550 for $94 (instead of $128) and the Samsung BD-C6500 with built-in Wi-Fi for $138 (slashed from $249.99). There’s also a Magnavox Wi-Fi-enabled Blu-ray player for just $69. Not surprisingly, Walmart touts “connected” Blu-ray players that support the Vudu video-streaming service (which Walmart purchased earlier this year) and doesn’t promote Netflix support.
So will Walmart’s Black Friday TV deals spur you to wait in line for hours in the middle of the night, all for the chance you may be trampled when stores open at 5 a.m.?
